Movies...movies...movies
Since I returned home from Florida…I have gone to movie after movie!
On Saturday night, Doug and I went to “Walk Hard, the Dewey Cox Story.” Usually these types of slap stick comedies typically do not appeal to me, but for some reason, I found this one hilarious! I guess I needed some type of comic relief in my life! Here is a brief synopsis of the movie:
Fictional musician Dewey Cox skyrockets from humble beginnings in Springberry, Alabama and eventually gets caught up in the fame of rock and roll. He begins to hang out with the big time people such as Elvis Presley and the Beatles. Jenna Fischer plays his backup singer and second wife, Darlene. He was first married to his first wife Edith with whom he had
many kids, but the marriage was over when she found Dewey about to have sex with Darlene. One of the pervasive themes of the movie is the fact that he accidentally cut his brother in half at the waist when he was a child. This causes his father to frequently repeat the phrase "The Wrong Kid Died" until he accidentally kills himself in the same fashion.
Christie and I went to the next on my list, “Juno.” I loved loved loved this movie! If you like the movie “Little Miss Sunshine” you will really enjoy this.
Juno is a Mid-Western highschooler (from Minnesota!), who decides one day, out of boredom or curiosity, to have sex with her friend Bleeker, a member of her school's track team. She likes him well enough, but isn't hung up on him. This one time encounter results in Juno's pregnancy. She and her best friend Leah decide to take control of the situation by browsing for prospective adoptive parents in the local Pennysaver, and Juno settles on seemingly perfect, affluent couple Mark and Vanessa.
The last movie I saw during my holiday break, was “Sweeny Todd: The Demon Baber of Fleet Street.” I just love Johnny Depp. In fact, I think I have loved him since his days on 21 Jump Street! And yes, I know that he (along with his movie side kicks, Helena Bonham Carter and Tim Burton) is a little odd, to say the least; I just think he is an amazing actor! Anyway, besides my slight obsession with Mr. Depp, Sweeny Todd was a great movie. Warning to all you non-musically loving folk…there is a whole lot of singing!
The story centers on the character of Sweeney Todd, formerly known as Benjamin Barker, who returns from the penal colonies in Australia, where he has spent fifteen years on false charges. When he learns from Mrs. Lovett, whose meat pies are the worst in London, that his wife poisoned herself after being raped by Judge Turpin (the man who wrongly imprisoned him), and that his daughter is the ward of the same Judge Turpin, he vows revenge. The two become conspirators in a dark plot that results in mass murder, booming business for Lovett's shop, and ultimately tragedy.
